Even though the game started off slowly for the Canadian Women’s Team, it was a great two periods for Team Finland. Their defense was strong and solid and their goaltending was a brick wall.

The first period was full of back and forth play with a lot of pressure put on both ends. There was no lack of effort by either team. The second period was much of the same except with some questionable calls by the refs.

It was in the third period when the Canadians shone through and laid their hand on the table. Halfway through the period, Meghan Agosta-Marciano picked up a rebound, shot it on net, hit the crossbar, and scored the first goal of the game. Not long afterwards, Jayna Hefford put Team Canada up by two. Even though Canada took a penalty in the third, Rebecca Johnston nailed one home for a final score of 3-0 Team Canada over Team Finland.

The last minute of play was intense and I started to wonder if the Finnish team would come back to break the shutout as they were up by two players when Canada took a penalty and then Team Finland pulled their goalie. In the end, the Canadians were victorious.

The next women’s hockey game is scheduled for Wednesday, February 12th, when they take on their ultimate rival, Team USA. With their last win, 9-0 against Team Switzerland, Team USA has proven they will be a forceful opponent on Wednesday.

Enjoy your win, Team Canada, you’ve earned both of them so far!

Go Canada!
