A Flames Run Down And News Around The NHL
A little run down on the Calgary Flames and NHL today: Fresh off the IR, backup goalie Henrik Karlsson was sent back down to the Abbotsford Heat for some conditioning. Â Leland Irving is returning to the lineup as the backup for Miikka Kiprusoff. Â With Karlsson in Abbotsford, is there a trade in his future? Â Could the Flames be looking to build with a youthful goaltender? Â Karlsson isn’t young, but he’s not exactly the aging goalie that Kiprusoff is. Â Karlsson is 28, he’s young enough to be worth while to a team needing a solid backup goalie. Â Maybe the Flames can [...]
Faces That Shape The Calgary Flames, Part Three
Tonight is the final segment of this series, on Thursday night I discussed those of black and mulatto heritage who played for the Calgary Flames, Friday night was minorities who are not minorities outside the NHL, and tonight I wrap it up with aboriginal Canadians.  The Flames have had their fair share of Métis and First Nations players through the years.  The Inuits are not represented by the Flames, seeing as the first and only Inuk currently plays for the Nashville Predators, Jordin Tootoo.  While much of the aboriginal players are in the AHL or other leagues, the NHL does [...]
Quick Thoughts on Blackhawks/Flames
I’m delighted to say that my proclamation of doom for yesterday night was inaccurate- the Calgary Flames beat the Chicago Blackhawks, winning a 3-1 game. It was a classic Flames win- not much offense, good in their own zone, and Jarome Iginla having a great night in doing so.  A few wandering thoughts:
Faces That Shape The Calgary Flames, Part Two
Yesterday was Part One of this three part series in which I discussed Calgary Flames players who were of black and mulatto culture.  Today’s post will be on those who are a minority in hockey, but not necessarily outside of the sport.  When looking at the the numbers from last year, out of the 978 players in the NHL, the vast majority of them were Canadians or Americans.  However, these are not the only ones that helped shape the face of the sport.  With representation from over 18 different countries the NHL is far from strictly a Canadian-American sport.  The Calgary Flames [...]
Game Preview: Blackhawks vs. Flames
Tonight at 9 PM EST (7 pm local time), the Calgary Flames (23-22-6) play host to the Chicago Blackhawks (29-15-7) at the Pengrowth Saddledome. The last time these two teams played was on December 18th in Chicago, a one-sided affair that Chicago ended up winning 4-2, a score that didn’t accurately reflect how badly the Flames were beaten. The ‘Hawks built up a 3-0 lead that held out easily. The Flames are coming off a 3-1 loss to Detroit on Tuesday, which the Blackhawks are continuing on their tour of Western Canada, having lost their last two in Vancouver and Edmonton.
Faces That Shape The Calgary Flames, Part One
February is Black History Month in both Canada and the United States and while hockey is largely populated by mainly white players and fans, it is important to point out that they are not the only ones who enjoy the most AWESOMEST sport ever.  In this multipart series, players both past and present from will be highlighted for their contributions to the Calgary Flames and the ever changing face of the game.  Tonight’s post will focus on those players of black and mulatto cultures who have played for the Flames. To start this off: Player: Jarome Iginla Seasons With Flames: 15 Position: [...]
A Few Thoughts On The Man Upstairs
Well that was not the outcome I had hoped for the Calgary Flames‘ game against the Detroit Red Wings. Â However, with this loss does come a bright spot for a member of Abbotsford Heat. Â Wednesday afternoon, Krys Kolanos was recalled from the Abbotsford Heat to step up as a center for the Flames.
