Flames Sign First-Round Pick Baertschi

Calgary, AB – The Calgary Flames announced today the signing of their 2011 first round pick Sven Baertschi.

“From an organizational perspective, it is important we demonstrate our commitment to our young prospects and Sven is one of our highest first round picks in many years,” said Flames General Manager Jay Feaster. “We saw no reason to delay getting him signed and we began discussing a contract with his agent immediately following the Draft. We reached an agreement today and are very pleased to welcome him to the Flames family.”

Baertschi, a native of Langenthal, Switzerland, played in 66 games with the Portland Winterhawks (WHL) last season netting 34 goals and 51 assists for 85 points and was a +23 leading all WHL rookies in every offensive category. He also played in 21 post season games where he scored 10 goals, added 17 assists for 27 points which was the second highest goal, assist and point total on the team and tied him for second in WHL playoff scoring.

Contract terms: Three year entry level contract at $925,000 per season with a average annual value of $1,450,000.
