Calgary Flames Winning Streak Comes To An End

The Calgary Flames lost to the Tampa Bay Lightning by a score of 6-3 on November 14th. Their six-game win streak unfortunately came to an end.

The Calgary Flames six-game win streak and seven-game point streak came to an end on November 14th. I’m still bitter because of 2004, so the fact that this loss came against the Tampa Bay Lightning stings a little bit.

In more bad news, Chad Johnson wasn’t his typical Chad Johnson self that he has been this season. After allowing two goals on the first four shots, the Bolts were up 2-1 heading into second period.

After 40 minutes of play, the Flames coaching staff also decided they had seen enough. Johnson let in four goals on 21 shots. Brian Elliott started the third period and let in the first goal on the first shot. So things weren’t going well for the Flames, clearly. Elliott ended up letting in just that one goal on 13 shots.

If Johnson won this game, it would have been the first time a Flames goaltender has started and won seven consecutive games since Mike Vernon in the 1992-93 season. Don’t worry, we still love Johnson with all our hearts. His head was just not in it tonight.

Good news is that Sean Monahan and Johnny Gaudreau‘s point streaks continue. Monahan is now on an eight-game point streak, which is a career high. Gaudreau is now on a six-game point streak (since before his injury) and has points in every game since his return to the lineup. This was actually the first game since his return where he didn’t have a multi-point game. He has nine points in the five games since his return to the lineup.

In more good news, the Calgary Flames did manage to snag two powerplay goals, bringing their PP stats in December even better than what they were. They went 2/4 on the PP tonight. They also let in one PP goal against, but the Bolts did have five PP opportunities. But, the Flames did let in a short-handed goal. So that’s not always fun. and that goal came on the first shot against Elliott in the second period.

Was this a step-back for the team? Was their sudden success just a facade? Well, we can’t tell for sure. But let’s just their next few games before the holidays don’t get them out of a playoff position.
