Ken King Comes Out of Hibernation

I heard Ken King on Fan960 yesterday. It was nice to finally get some fresh info on our team. In a nutshell, here’s what he said:

  1. The reason no news has been coming out of the dome is that “they were busy with reviews and the Memorial Cup”
  2. Darryl Sutter is sticking around. He’ll be getting some help in the form of one or two assistant GM’s, one of whom might be Kelly Kisio whom King said has been “shortlisted, but not guaranteed the job.”
  3. Brent Sutter is staying on.
  4. We have a pretty good hockey team. We didn’t do what we wanted to do last season, but we’re not that far off.
  5. Jarome Iginla being traded was never discussed. The Flames want and need more out of Jarome, he knows that better than anybody.
  6. The organization as a whole is going to have to be more media friendly. In King’s words, the media took a “if you’re not going to be nice to us, we’re not going to be nice to you” attitude. He claims he understands that and will work to change it. My guess is that Darryl’s response to that was something along the lines of “To be quite honest with you, I don’t give a shit.”
  7. Calgary the team, and Calgary the city are still preferred destinations for NHL players. Getting people to agree to come here is not a problem. Suck that Edmonton.

No word on what the team is planning to do about its giant payroll and lack of draft picks, but King hinted at Darryl having some kind of plan to accomplish amazing things on the floor on draft day like he has done so many times in the past. Woo-hoo….we’re acquiring Dustin Byfuglien and Mike Richards.

Oh yeah…and there’s gonna be an outdoor game in Calgary. Against the Habs. In February. When it’s really really really freakin’ cold here. Insert a generic rant against winter in Calgary here.

Anyways, it’s nice that there’s something fresh happening again. That was a pretty dry 6 weeks.

Go Flyers.
