Surprise, surprise – the Calgary Flames’ farm system is close to bone-dry right now. I guess that’s what happens when you trade away all your draft picks and top prospects, right Darryl Sutter?
They never had the luxury of a first-round pick last year, but this time around the Flames have a chance to make an impact with the 13th overall pick.
While we’re in the thick of the 2012 FanSided NHL Mock Draft, let’s take a look at some possibilities for team with some definite needs.
With Mark Giordano establishing himself as a top-four defenseman, and Anton Babchuck (UFA) putting up a solid 2010-11 campaign, I think it’s safe to say their defensive core is there (also with Bouwmeester, Regehr, Sarich).
The Flames could really use some firepower upfront. Whether it’s a centre or winger, I say they take the best foreword available when number 13 is called.
Here’s a look at some possibilities, should they be available:
First Choice – Sean Couturier
Position: Centre
Shoots: Left
Height: 6’4”
Weight: 197
Born: December 7, 1992
Hometown: Bathurst, NB
Second Choice – Ryan Strome
Position: centre
Shoots: Right
Height: 6’0”
Weight: 175
Born: July 11, 1993
Hometown: Mississauga, ON
Third Choice – Sven Baertschi
Position: Left Wing
Shoots: Left
Height: 5’10”
Weight: 181
Born: October 5, 1992
Hometown: Langenthal, CHE
I also wouldn’t be mad at: Brandon Saad
Position: Left Wing
Shoots: Left
Height: 6’1”
Weight: 208
Born: October 27, 1992
Hometown: Gibsonia, PA
However, there is absolutely no guarantee these guys will even be available come the 13th pick. If they’re not, you best believe I’ve got a pocket full of backups. Here’s to hoping!
