Looks like everyone wanted a piece of the Calgary Flames captain, Jarome Iginla at the All Star Game today. With a goal and two assists, Iginla walked away part of the winning team, Team Chara. With 21 goals total, it seemed like everyone was getting a shot at picking up at least a point. From the first goal, Pavel Datsyuk setting up Marian Gaborik, to the last goal, Joffrey Lupul with help from Tyler Seguin and Phil Kessel, it was a true display of skill from both teams.
While there were some moments of “What Was He Thinking” *ahemPhaneufahem*, it was overall an entertaining game. What added to the event was mic-ing the goalies and listening to them talk as they guarded the net. And the players got into it on Twitter with them chirping each other and offering some encouraging words:
"@jamiebenn14: Make it look easy but way harder than it looks! Points on the board! #TeamChara #ASG"
"@ebs_14: Crispy passes to @jamiebenn14"
"@JLupul: I just got Datsuyk to show how to do his sick breakaway move. His response, “like this, it’s so easy.” Ya maybe for you bro… #juicymitts"
But more shockingly, is the money stats.
It was Team $107.06 million versus Team $85.88 million. For those of you who didn’t guess, Team Chara had the $107.06 million payroll while Team Alfredsson only racked up $85.88 million.
Those who scored for Team Chara were $52.525 million of the payroll, Team Alfredsson made up $23.35 million. Meaning of the $85.88 million, 44% of the payroll scored for Team Alfredsson and 49% of Team Chara’s payroll scored. For the assists? $33.475 million racked up assists for Team Chara and Team Alfredsson racking up assists with $43.55 million. Meaning 31% of Team Chara’s team payroll had an assist while nearly 50% of Team Alfredsson’s payroll had an assist.
Looks like talent can be bought with a good chunk of money.
As the All Star Weekend comes to a close, the NHL and its fans look forward to Tuesday when the regular season games resume.
Go Flames Go!
