Calgary Flames: Hockey Day In Canada Edition

It seems today is Scotiabank Hockey Day in Canada.  Now call me an uninformed American, but isn’t every day Hockey Day in Canada?   I mean seriously, all you guys ever tell me is how “hockey is Canada’s sport” and yet you still manage to set a weekend (yeah why do you call it Hockey Day but have the slogan “4 Days. 27 Rinks.  One National Obsession”?) aside for the game.  I mean the US calls baseball its “national past time” but there’s no weekend dedicated to it.

But I digress, today marks the start of this event, with Prince Edward Island being the first province to host the event, with all past Hockey Day in Canadas being hosted by cities.

Today’s match ups include:

Winnipeg Jets versus Pittsburgh Penguins

Edmonton Oilers versus Ottawa Senators

Montreal Canadiens versus Toronto Maple Leafs

Vancouver Canucks versus Calgary Flames

In addition to the broadcasts being in English and French, CBC has been known to have broadcasts in Italian, Punjabi, Mandarin and Cantonese, pulling in as many viewers for this event a possible.

During Hockey Day in Canada Flames are 5-4-1-1, not exactly the most stellar record, but much better than the Oilers who, before today, are 2-7-0-2.

Check out Dave’s game preview for his opinions on tonight’s match up against the Canucks.

Puck drops at 8PM MST.

And let’s hope Mikael Backlund keeps his hands to himself this game.
