It seems Calgary Flames’ Mikael Backlund will be out for some time with his shoulder injury from last night’s game against the Vancouver Canucks. While his has not been placed on the IR as of now, the recalling of Paul Byron would lead one to believe this.
What should have been a victorious celebration, a shoot out win over the Canucks gave the Flames the much needed two points, the Flames instead are now struggling to keep the team together and healthy for this desperate playoff push.
If Backlund is placed on the IR, he joins David Moss (who’s been out since November 13th), Derek Smith (out since December 30th), Curtis Glencross (out since January 18th), Lee Stempniak (out since February 2nd), and Blair Jones (who fractured his ankle Thursday against the Phoenix Coyotes).
This does not bode well for the Flames. With 5 guys on the IR, and a possible 6th on the way, it seems playoff dreams are almost dashed. They sit in 9th, 2 points behind the Coyotes with 26 games left in the regular season. That’s a lot of time to pick up two points, but that’s also a lot of time to lose momentum and more players to injuries.
Here’s hoping Backlund’s injuries are minor and will be back on the ice sooner rather than later.
Go Flames Go!
