Thank goodness Brent Sutter and Jay Feaster showed some restraint on Monday with the Trade Deadline “insanity” and didn’t go trade mad with the Calgary Flames. This summer will be a better time to rework the team into something capable of winning games. There will be 10 contracts up this summer, with only three RFA, which means there will be opportunity to fix this mess.
The summer offers an opportunity to fix what is wrong with the team, but how much hope do you have for this team? What will the Flames rebuild with?
- Blake Comeau is a RFA with $2,500,000 cap hit
- Lee Stempnik is a UFA with $1,900,000 cap hit
- David Moss (IR) is a UFA with $1,300,000 cap hit
- Mikael Backlund (EL) is a RFA with $1,270,833 cap hit
- Tom Kostopoulos is a UFA with $916,667 cap hit
- Blair Jones is RFA with $525,000 cap hit
- Guillaume Desbiens is RFA with $525,000 cap hit
- Cory Sarich is UFA with $3,600,000 cap hit
- Scott Hannan UFA with $1,000,000 cap hit
There isn’t a lot of money in these contracts. Yes, I left one of the UFA off that list, but I’m hoping the Flames will resign him before he has a chance to move on.
Who’s not going to come back next year? I want to say “It’s safe to say — will not be returning” but Feaster is capable of going crazy and doing something that baffles Flamedom. Cory Sarich could be a very expensive player going for the Press Room Hat Trick. July 1 could be a terrifying day for the Flames or it could be a moment that could lead to a chance to a winning season.
