Flames Ink Berra

The Calgary Flames announced Wednesday that the club has signed 26-year-old goalie Reto Berra to a one-year, $765,000 contract with an annual value of $1,381,250. Berra was acquired by the Flames in a trade with St. Louis on April 1.

The 6 foot 4, 200-pound Switzerland-native, is currently playing in the Swiss A League for Biel. He has posted a .906 save percentage while averaging 3.01  goals against per game.

With the addition of Berra, Calgary now has potentially has 6 goalies competing for the starting goaltender job. Those 6 are: Joey MacDonald, Barry Brust, Danny Taylor, Reto Berra, Joni Ortio and Laurent Brossoit. One could add Jon Gillies’ name to that list but he should stay in college as he will only be a true-sophomore next school year.

What I think we will see is MacDonald as the starter and Berra as the back-up but both Taylor and Brust will get a taste of the NHL in the 2013-14 season. Brossoit should stay in juniors for just one more year and then try to crack the NHL or AHL roster. I don’t think there’s really a spot for him next season in the AHL or NHL.
