Even though the Olympics have been at the top of the headlines for the past while, there’s still a lot going on in the world of the Calgary Flames. Here’s some of the more recent happenings from around the team.

The biggest news of the week has been that Joni Ortio was called up again from the Abbotsford Heat. The Flames website announced yesterday that the goaltender has been called up, and Karri Ramo has been placed on the IR list because of the injury he endured during his last game against the Minnesota Wild. Ramo was taken out of net barely six minutes into the game because of a lower body injury. The Flames have also called up Derek Smith and Ben Hanowski.

Lane MacDermid has been suspended by the Abbotsford Heat. As explained on their website,  MacDermid failed “to report following the AHL All-Star break.”

Ladislav Smid and Reto Berra are done playing in Sochi after their national teams were eliminated from the Olympics. Smid and his team from the Czech Republic lost 5-2 to the USA in the quarterfinals, while Berra and his team lost to Latvia in the qualification round. Both players put in a full effort for their national teams and should be very proud of the games they played. Tomorrow is the semifinal rounds of men’s Olympic hockey which will set the stage for the bronze medal game on Saturday and the gold medal game on Sunday.

Curtis Glencross is getting closer to returning to the Flames line-up. He skated on his own, but isn’t quite ready for a full practice with the rest of the Flames yet.

The Calgary Flames return to action on Thursday, February 27th against the L.A. Kings.
