Mama Said There’d Be Nights Like These re: Calgary Flames

For the third consecutive game, the Calgary Flames have allowed more than 25 shots before the 2nd intermission.  The St. Louis Blues had 28 shots on goal and 4 goals before going into coast mode and defeating our Calgary Flames 4-1.

Chalk some of this loss up to the “advanced stats” gods getting back at the Flames for Thursday’s win in Edmonton.

Also chalk some of the loss up to Laddy Smid being our third best defenseman tonight and Brian McGrattan being more visible than Johnny Gaudreau.

The popcorn was still hot when Devin Setoguchi (playing in his 1st regular season game) introduced himself to fellow Flame Deryk Engelland.  By introduced, I mean ran into him and afforded the Blues an offensive opportunity they would bury.  UPDATE – – This was a precursor as to how Engelland”s entire night would go!

Sean Monahan was out of sync in the first period.  Losing face-offs, throwing the puck at his own net, entering the St. Louis zone offside.

Kris Russell was out of sync in the first period.  Russell’s stick exploding as he attempted a buzzer beating shot was the epitome of his first period.

Ladddy Smid had a wonderful period.  Multiple blocked shots, standing up for his teammates, even a steal and a shot.

For both St. Louis goals, Deryk Engelland was in the penalty box.  First time by himself after a high sticking penalty.  The second time he was somewhat bailed out by a Blues penalty three seconds into his minor.

TJ  Brodie seemingly tried to skate the puck through center and  into the Blues zone every time he touched the puck.  It worked best when Mason Raymond was on the ice with him.  There is definitely some great chemistry between Brodie and Raymond.  The dynamic duo created two good scoring chances.

19 shots against!  I know the Blues are likely a Top 5 team.  I know during this period the Calgary Flames played like a bottom 5 team but 19 shots against!?!

3rd period firewood

The special teams arrived!!  Our Calgary Flames scored a powerplay goal on a nice tip-down by Curtis Glencross of a Mark Giordano shot.  After giving up a powerplay goal per period, the Flames killed both Blues powerplay opportunities in the final frame.

Paul Byron had a shot on goal early  in the period and it must of invigorated him!  Byron would make an excellent defensive play stopping a sure goal by the Blues then would skate up the ice and draw a penalty after taking another shot on goal.  On said powerplay, Byron would fire his 3rd shot of the period on the Blues goalie.  Later in  the period, Byron would send a nice pass to Backlund who missed the net.
