January 19, 2004 – Calgary Flames Look To Repeat History

Heading into Tuesday’s road game with the Anaheim Ducks at the Honda Center, our Calgary Flames have not celebrated a regular season victory in Anaheim since Jan. 19, 2004.

The Flames sport an 0-13-5 mark during that miserable span, including four losses to our current #1 goaltender Jonas Hiller.

The nifty note about the Flames win over the Ducks way back on January 19, 2004 – – Jarome Iginla was scratched with a sprained right ankle and the offensive leader that night is current assistant General Manager Craig Conroy.

"Conroy had a career-high four assists to lead the Calgary Flames to a 5-1 victory over Anaheim on Monday. The Flames won in Anaheim for the first time since January 13, 1999, ending a nine-game winless stretch (0-6-3) at the Pond.Read the rest of the January 19, 2004 recap HERE."

It’s hard to wrap one’s brain around an almost 11 year slump so I’m here to try to put some perspective on the issue.

  1. The 2003-04 1st round draft pick of our Calgary Flames was Dion Phaneuf.
  2. The movie “Along Came Polly” was the blockbuster movie released just days before that the fateful night where our Calgary Flames last defeated the Anaheim Ducks.
  3. The song “Hey Ya” by OutKast was the Billboard top song at the time.  People still bought music on CASSETTES at this point in time!!
  4. Current Calgary Mayor Naheed Nenshi made his first venture into politics during the year 2004.  He unsuccessfully ran for a seat on Calgary’s City Council.
  5. Lastly for those folks who are the uber-optimists…the last time the Calgary Flames beat the Anaheim Ducks in Anaheim, the Flames made it all the way to the Stanley Cup Finals.

Dare to dream.  Go Flames Go!
