Calgary Flames Prospects Make Team Canada WJC Camp

Calgary Flames prospects, Mason McDonald and Brandon Hickey will be awaiting news of whether they made the World Juniors team when the selection camp ends on Sunday.

The schedule for the selection camp saw three solid days of practice with game time on the Saturday and Sunday, at the MasterCard Centre in Etobicoke, Ontario. For both Hickey and McDonald, they’ll be hoping they’ve made an impression over that time and make the cut from the thirty players in camp.

Mason McDonald certainly appears to have the easier task as one of only two goaltenders in camp; one would assume that he’s a lock. He backs up his credentials as one of the two tenders with a reasonable seven wins that he has back-stopped in the QMJHL with the Charlottetown Islanders.

Brandon Hickey meanwhile faces stiffer competition for a spot among the final quota of defensemen; however a strong start to his second year in the NCAA with Boston University won’t hurt his chances.

A five goal haul from his first sixteen games this year has him down as his side’s top scoring blue-liner; based on that form, he should be able to make the grade. When you look at some of the names in camp though, selection would certainly represent an achievement:

The Calgary Flames will obviously be watching on intently; should the pair both make the team it represents some decent drafting and a great chance for the guys to continue further their development with some different coaching staff.

Especially interesting will be Mason McDonald’s ongoing development, given how much of a ‘thorn in their side’ goaltending has been of late for the Calgary Flames.

Brandon Hickey is very much on an upward trajectory and continued time against older guys in the NCAA will help groom him for a future on the Calgary Flames blue-line, with a hope that he continues to improve his points production.
