Michael Ferland will be missing for the Calgary Flames when they take on the Carolina Hurricanes, after leaving the Columbus game with an upper-body injury.
Unfortunately for Ferland, it doesn’t mark the first time he’s had to take a seat in the stands due to injury this season.
“It’s not going to be long-term.” – Bob Hartley (flames.NHL.com)
He missed eight games earlier in the season as the result of another upper-body injury and will no doubt be raring to pull his Calgary Flames jersey back on and get back onto the ice sooner rather than later.
It seems with Ferland it’s a case of bad luck as opposed to being more susceptible to injury than others; his withdrawal from the game with the Columbus Blue Jackets came as the result of a front of net collision with William Karlsson; a somewhat unavoidable injury sometimes.
The biggest key for the youngster will be to bounce back in strong form and not need time to find his feet once more. Should that occur, the Calgary Flames will have a decision to make; the injury reserve list has so far managed to prevent anyone being sent down to Stockton.
Calgary Flames head coach, Bob Hartley had the following to say to the Flames official website: “(Ferland’s) good, he’s good. It’s upper body. He’s not good to be on the ice but he should be back on the ice in the next couple days. It’s not going to be long-term.”
The clear hope is that the player will return against the Dallas Stars when the Calgary Flames close out their latest stint on the road.
Ferland will be replaced on the leading line by David Jones; an almost like-for-like swap as both are certainly grittier players as opposed to skill guys.
The 23 year-old has chipped in with some useful points this season, out doing his previous best for the Calgary Flames and showing the tenacity expected when the Calgary Flames picked him up in the fifth round of the 2010 NHL Entry Draft.
His absence should hopefully be a short one; with any luck Ferland will be suiting up in Dallas to help the Calgary Flames shut down the likes of Jamie Benn and Tyler Seguin.
