It’s a move with potential to shake the apple-cart, but a Calgary Flames move for Jonathan Drouin would be a smart move, given their rebuild and his youth.
The best part of acquiring Jonathan Drouin is that he’s never going to be available cheaper than now; both he and Tampa Bay Lightning management are backed into a corner right now.
But also, he could complete an elite first line with Johnny Gaudreau and either Sam Bennett or Sean Monahan. That line right there could be the one that leads from the front to the play-offs.
The big concern obviously is the player’s attitude and temperament; his current stand-off over a new deal suggests he has temperament as fiery as the Calgary Flames themselves.

That leads to the obvious questions of shaking the apple-cart or carrying on as is.
Cost could also be prohibitive for the Calgary Flames; with new deals needing to be dished out to Sean Monahan and Johnny Gaudreau it suddenly becomes a challenge to fit everyone under the salary cap.
Given Drouin (or his agent) is questioning what the Lightning has offered, this could nix any possible deal for the Calgary Flames from the start.
It’s rare for a young, potentially elite winger to come on the market without a known asking price; Jonathan Drouin is that guy, albeit a risky one, but still one that would look quite good in Calgary Flames red!
