The Calgary Flames, who are a team that are pushing their way back into the playoffs, went 2-1-0 last week. Of course, some players stood out more than others.

The Calgary Flames played three great games last week. Even if they did lose one, they still battled pretty hard. Even all the players agreed that they played a great game against the New York Rangers, the game they lost, so it’s unfortunate they couldn’t walk away with two extra points.

But anyways, let’s talk about the players and who stood out more than others this week. It was a team effort this week, all the players battled pretty well and played great games. Well, most of the players. Cough cough Dennis Wideman cough cough.

Jokes! Sort of.

Moving on. Let’s get to the three stars of the week.

THIRD STAR

Kris Versteeg

Kris Versteeg didn’t do a whole lot this week. Just one goal and one assist. However, those stats aren’t the reason for him making a star of the week.

He got into a fight in the third game of the week against the Rangers. Now, all players in the league have to keep their jersey “tied-down”, and if they get into a fight and it wasn’t tied down and their jersey comes off, that results in a game misconduct.

I believe this was Versteeg’s first fight of the season and I’m sure he probably wasn’t expecting to get into a fight. Ergo, he didn’t find the need to tie down his jersey. But he did get into a fight. And his jersey did come off.

However, this fight isn’t the reason he made a star of the week. While he was being ejected, he decided to give sort of a “Queen’s Wave” to the fans as he’s leaving the ice. And this was very funny and he deserves a star for this alone.

Next.

TJ Brodie

If you watched any game this week, you might understand why TJ Brodie earned his name as a star. Even with an anchor as a defensive partner, I mean Dennis Wideman. Sorry auto-correct. But in all seriousness, this whole week, Wideman has been somewhat messing up. And by somewhat, I mean constantly. He was the reason for two goals scored against the Flames. And since Brodie is his defensive partner, this is affecting him too.

But that still hasn’t stopped Brodie. He had five assists this week, four of them coming in one game against the New Jersey Devils. Two of the goals were basically made because of him, one coming in overtime where the Calgary Flames extended their win-streak to three games.

His four assists in that game was the first time a Flames defenseman had four assists in one game since Dion Phaneuf in 2008.

And to top this off, two of those assists where I said the goals were basically made because of him, they were important goals. One was a game-tying goal in the third period and the other, like I said, came in overtime.

That night, he rightfully so was named the first star of the game. And he’ll always be the first star in our hearts (and second star for this week).

Sean Monahan

Like with Brodie, if you just slightly paid attention to the Calgary Flames this week, you probably have a good idea on why Sean Monahan earned first star from us. Everybody and their mother won’t stop talking about how he’s one goal away from 100 goals (including me).

But it’s not that he’s at 99 career goals and one away from 100, it’s that once he reaches that 100 at the current age that he’s at, he will be the youngest Flame in franchise history to reach 100 goals.

2017 so far has been quite the year for the 22-year-old. Since January 13th, in the ten games after that, he had nine goals in 10 games and 11 points in that stretch. He was at one point leading the league for most goals since January 13th.

This week, he had three goals, two coming in one game, and came very close to reaching that 100th goal. He had like, a million chances, but the puck just did not want to go in. Of course that would happen, if he’s about to set a franchise record. He also had an assist this week and two powerplay points.

For him coming close to setting a franchise record and completely picking up his game this year, he’s earned our first star of the week.
