Happy Monday Calgary Flames fans! It’s a rainy and snowy day here in Calgary (come on, we’re almost in May). Let’s check out some Flames news.

The season may be over, but that doesn’t mean we don’t have plenty to talk about. Ok, I’m being a little generous when I say “plenty”. But, let’s check out what’s happening with the Calgary Flames today.

Of course, since it’s Calgary, there are still talks about a new arena. And with Joe Louis Arena having it’s final season, the Saddledome will now officially be the oldest arena in the NHL. There were proposals for a new arena with the CalgaryNEXT project, but the Calgary Sports and Entertainment Corporation would like to keep the arena at or close to Stampede Park. And CalgaryNEXT would not be at that location.

Mayor Nenshi also did not want to go through with CalgaryNEXT because of the costs and how most of the money would be public money. This project is now presumed to be somewhat dead.

This new proposal for this Plan B arena would actually be quite close to the Saddledome.

Via CTV News Calgary:

“There is a lot of vacant empty land there, there is a lot of infrastructure, there are a bunch of condos that have come in, there is a bunch of planned infrastructure, we’re looking at the Green Line alignment through Victoria Park, cycling track work being done,” said Ward 8 councillor Evan Woolley.

The Council met this morning, but no information has been released yet about the arena.
