Happy Tuesday Calgary Flames fans! Me constantly mentioning that it was getting nicer in Calgary was a jinx because now it’s cold and rainy. Let’s check out some Flames news.

What I said yesterday that I’d talk about today was the 2026 Olympics. But before that, how could I not mention the Calgary Flames finally signing GM Brad Treliving to a multi-year contract extension. It was a long wait for Flames fans but we can finally let out a breath of air.

Via Calgaryflames.com:

"“You’re obviously excited to get that done with,” Treliving said. “I’m happy for my family. They love Calgary […] It’s a happy day for our family, no question, and professionally I’m thrilled.”"

Don’t worry, we’ll have more on this later today!

Now on to other things and that’s the 2026 Winter Olympics. The NHL has already said that NHL players won’t be participating in the 2018 Olympics which is a huge bummer. I mean, many people still think NHL players will be going regardless.

But let’s talk about how Calgary is a potential host for the 2026 Olympics. The Olympics have been wanting to recycle former Olympic cities now because economically wise, it’s a lot better. And with Calgary being the host for the 1988 Winter Olympics, it fits.

According to Calgary Herald, The Calgary Bid Exploration Committee (CBEC) was formed in September after council agreed in June to spend $5 million exploring a bid to bring the Winter games back.

It was also recently announced that Stockholm has now dropped their bid for the 2026 Olympics for financial reasons, meaning Calgary has a better shot.

Via Calgary Herald:

"At the same time Calgary studies a potential bid, the mayor of Stockholm said earlier this week the city won’t bid for the 2026 Winter Olympics because the IOC won’t state how big the financial contribution to the host city will be.Calgary’s mayor, Naheed Nenshi, told reporters Wednesday while Stockholm’s concerns are legitimate, their dropping out is not relevant to Calgary’s work.“We have to row our own boat,” Nenshi said. “If we move forward to a bid, it has to be a great bid, it doesn’t matter who is bidding against us.”"
