Calgary Flames at the World Championship: May 15th Recap
Another day means a new day of Calgary Flames players at the World Championship. Let’s check out what happened today.
Team Canada played today but not Team USA unfortunately, so we can’t talk about how great Calgary Flames superstar Johnny Gaudreau is. But we can talk about how great Chad Johnson is! He was between the pipes today against Team Norway after Canada suffered their first loss in overtime two days ago against Switzerland.
Canada opened up the scoring late in the first period on a powerplay goal thanks to Brayden Schenn. And Canada just kept going and didn’t back down. They got three more powerplay goals, two by Colton Parayko who was named Canada’s player of the game. And one more equal strength goal to shutout Norway 5-0. You know what that means, right?
Chad got a shutout! His first shutout of the tournament. I mean, Canada only let Norway get 10 shots on goal. But Chad stopped all 10. He is now 3-0-0 at the tournament and has allowed just four goals in his three starts. He has 1.33 GAA and 0.917 save percentage. Not too shabby, Johnson. Not too shabby.

“You’re sitting here thinking, ‘We’ve had a hard time scoring goals against the Swiss and the French and here now, we’re getting our chances but they’re still not going in or they’re not counting,” Head coach Jon Cooper said after the game. “But we felt we were on top of our game and that it was just a matter of time. Thank goodness the power play was rolling.”
With this win, Canada will be first place in Group B with 16 points in 6 games. It also eliminated Norway. The top four teams in each Group will move on to the quarter finals. And Group B is now settled: It’ll be Canada, Czech Republic, Switzerland, and Finland. In Group A, the top three for sure advancing are Russia, USA, and Sweden (yay Johnny and Chad!). Latvia and Germany will be playing one last game to determine the last spot for the quarter finals.
