Want to test your Calgary Flames knowledge and see how well you know this team? Take this ultimate fan trivia test and see how much you really know!

The Calgary Flames season may be over as they watch other teams compete for the Stanley Cup, but that doesn’t mean we can’t still have some fun! This season has been quite the whirlwind for the Flames, but what season isn’t?

Now whether you’ve been a Flames fan for just two seasons or you’ve been one since the day you were born (like me, unfortunately) there are always fun and exciting things happening every season. Sometimes, some not so fun or exciting things happen. Like controversial calls, unfair penalties, and offside rulings, scoring on your own net, etc.

Even if you’re young, you may also know about things that happened, say in the 80s. Now, if you’re an ULTIMATE fan, then you basically know everything about the team. You live and breathe this team. Aka you’ve been suffering for a while now.

If you’re a new fan, welcome! Maybe you’ll learn a thing or two today. If you’ve been a fan for a long time, I’m very sorry for the amount of suffering you’ve most likely had to endure because of this team. That being said, let’s get on with it.

The Ultimate Fan Test.

We’ve compiled a fun list of questions to test your ultimate Calgary Flames knowledge. Now, before we move on with this, I definitely need to credit our friends over at the Dallas Stars blog here on FanSided, Blackout Dallas, for coming up with this idea. I took the test myself and it was fun seeing how much I knew about the Stars.

For this test, there are five levels, each level increasing in difficulty. Each level has 10 questions, so there are 50 questions total. Each question is worth two points, so it’s out of 100.

But wait.

We also have a few bonus questions along the way that will each be worth one point. So grab a piece of paper and a pen (or pencil, I’m not here to judge). And let’s get started! And hey, no cheating!

Level One: The Prospect

This is level one. This will be the easiest level. If you’re not even a Calgary Flames fan and you’re just a hockey fan in general, you can probably get most of these questions right anyways. Don’t worry if you think this level is boring, it’s supposed to be the easiest and for the beginners! Don’t worry, we’ve got a lot more hard questions coming in the next levels to really test your limits.

Level Five: The Hall of Famer

Now we get into the nitty-gritty. It’s all come down to these final ten questions. You think you can handle it? This level is for the extreme Flames fans. You basically live and breathe the Flames.

Don’t feel too bad about not knowing these, I didn’t even know most of these. My dad had to basically help me with most of these questions in the final two rounds seeing how I wasn’t alive for a lot of the incidents that happened (thanks dad). And remember, no Googling! Trust me, trying to even Google some of these questions is hard. You won’t be able to find an answer – that’s how hard this level is. It’s for the ultimate Flames fans.

What season did the Calgary Flames need to use six different goalies due to injuries?

    • BONUS: Name three of them.

Who had the series winning goal against the

    Montreal Canadiens

in 1989 in the Stanley Cup Final when the Flames won the cup?

    Calgary Flames
    Calgary Flames /

    Calgary Flames

Who was known as the Flames “third goalie” because of his ability to block shots when the goaltender was outside of the crease?

What is the most amount of goals that the Flames have scored in a game?

    • BONUS: Who was it against?

The Sutters are a large family (7 brothers – 6 played in the NHL) and now the second generation of Sutters have been making their mark as well. How many Sutters total have been in someway or another involved in the Flames organization?

Why are the Flames called the Flames?

Who was the referee who Flames fans don’t like (and he doesn’t like the Flames either) who called a controversial tripping penalty in game 7 against the Tampa Bay Lightning in 2004, where the Bolts scored and won the series and the cup?

During the 2004-2005 lockout, which Flames player played for the Iron Maiden which is a beer league in Calgary?

Who was the first ever player drafted by the Calgary Flames? (Note: Calgary, not Atlanta).

When the Flames won the cup in 1989 against the Montreal Canadiens, they had done a feat that no other NHL team has ever done before. What was that feat?

    Let’s see how you did!

    Level Five Answers

    1. The Calgary Flames needed to use six different goalies in 1998-1999.
      • BONUS: The six different goalies were: Fred Brathwaite, Ken Wregget, Jean-Sebastian Giguere, Tyler Moss, Tyrone Garner, and Andrei Trefilov. Remember: If you just got three of these right, go ahead and give yourself an extra bonus point.
    2. Doug Gilmour had the series winning goal against the Montreal Canadiens in 1989 in the Stanley Cup Final when the Flames won the cup.
    3. Jamie Macoun was known as the Flames “third goalie” because of his ability to block shots when the goaltender was outside of the crease.
    4. The most amount of goals that the Flames have scored in a game is 13 goals.
    5. The total amount of Sutters that have been in someway or another involved in the Flames organization is six: Duane, Darryl, Brent, Ron, Brian, and Brett. But if you said 7, you can also get a point since Shaun Sutter was drafted by Calgary, but never did anything with the team after that.
    6. The Flames are called the Flames because they kept that name from the name in Atlanta when they were the Atlanta Flames. Atlanta named their team the Flames to commemorate the burning of the city by General Sherman in the Civil War. When the team moved to Calgary, management held a contest/vote, and the fans chose to keep the Flames name, which also relates to Alberta’s petroleum industry (Source). If you just got that it was named due to the burning of Atlanta, then you can have the point.
    7. The referee who Flames fans don’t like (and he doesn’t like the Flames either) who called a controversial tripping penalty in game 7 against the Tampa Bay Lightning in 2004, where the Bolts scored and won the series and the cup is Kerry Fraser.
    8. During the 2004-2005 lockout, Rhett Warrener played for the Iron Maiden which is a beer league in Calgary. Fun fact: My manager at work was a ref and kicked him out of a game for a high stick.
    9. Denis Cyr was the first ever player drafted by the Calgary Flames.
    10. When the Flames won the cup in 1989, the feat they completed was being the only team in NHL history to defeat the Montreal Canadiens and win the Stanley Cup at the Forum on Montreal Forum ice.
