The Calgary Flames have filled out their top-four defencemen issue. They acquire Travis Hamonic from the New York Islanders for multiple picks.
After somewhat fixing their problems with the crease, the Calgary Flames have finally answered their top-four defencemen problem one week later! After hearing that GM Brad Treliving had been working out something for D Travis Hamonic from the New York Islanders, it’s finally happened. The trade is somewhat confusing though.
The Flames acquire Travic Hamonic and a fourth-round pick in 2019 or 2020 in exchange for their 2018 first round pick, 2018 second round pick, and a second round pick in 2019 or 2020. TSN’s Bob McKenzie breaks it down:
If CGY sends NYI a 2nd in 2019, the 4th the Flames get back is also in 2019. If CGY sends 2nd in 2020, the 4th rder they get back is 2020.

They promised me there would be no math in this job.

However, now the Flames will have no first, second, or third round picks at next year’s draft. Yikes. This means that the Flames management is fully confident that the Flames will be legitimate cup contenders next season.
Hamonic is also still on an great contract, with three years left on his contract of $3.857 million. An awesome price for a top-four defenceman.
Re. Calgary's top 4 D, Giordano, Brodie, Hamilton and Hamonic are all signed for at least the next 3 years. They're set.

Now with Mark Giordano, Dougie Hamilton, TJ Brodie, and now Travis Hamonic, the Flames top-four looks absolutely solid, and for a good price too!

Brodie-Hamonic
Kulak-Someone Big
Kylington, Fox, Andersson, Valimaki *drool forms*
Regardless of the age of its young forwards, a Giordano-Hamilton-Brodie-Hamonic top four instantly makes the #Flames Stanley Cup contenders.

Next: Flames Select D Juuso Valimaki With The 16th Pick
Welcome to the C of Red, Travis Hamonic!
