Hyped up NCAA free agent, forward Spencer Foo, picks the Calgary Flames over his hometown team – the Edmonton Oilers
For a second year in a row, Calgary Flames fans get that sweet taste of knowing a player chose their team over the Edmonton Oilers. Last year, there was Kris Versteeg who was on a PTO with the Oilers and basically signed with the Flames at the last minute instead for virtually the same price. Now, there was highly rated college free agent Spencer Foo.
But why the Foo signing was even better was because he grew up in Edmonton. Can you imagine that? Choosing a rival team over your childhood team? I mean, me personally, I would never in a million years choose the Oilers over the Flames. I feel like that’d be going against my own morals.
But thanks Spencer for picking the better team (*wink face*). Flames are set to finalize the Foo signing on July 1st.
Foo is a right-wing who was playing with Union College and was a finalist for the Hobey Baker award this season. Hm, I think another player on the Flames won the Hobey Baker right before making a large impact with the team…. Johnny Gaudreau anyone?

Per CalgaryFlames.com:
"Foo, a native of Edmonton, Alberta, just completed his junior year at Union College where he put up 26 goals and 36 assists for 62 points in 38 games and was a finalist for the 2016-17 Hobey Baker Memorial Award. He topped the 100 career points mark this season and had a program-record 21-game point streak in addition to tying for the ECAC scoring title; while leading the league in assists (25), multi-point games (14) and plus-minus (+20)."
Looks like the Calgary Flames are trying to fix their depth on the right-wing, hey? Brad Treliving’s been a busy man these last couple of weeks. Foo also sees Calgary as the perfect fit. He was deciding between three other teams (one being the Oilers) and picked the Flames. Thanks, kid.
Via CalgaryFlames.com:
"“First of all, it’s an absolute blessing to be in the position I am,” conceded the Union Dutchmen right winger, after making a much-awaited decision on his NHL organization of choice.“It’s tough comparing teams.“I know it’s most kids’ dreams to play for their hometown team, the one they grew up cheering for. That was certainly a consideration with me. All four of the organizations I was talked to at the end were great, great people, top to bottom. That made this really difficult.“But in the end, I thought the best fit for me was Calgary.”"
The only thing that I’m NOT happy about with this signing is all of the Foo puns on Twitter.

Welcome to the C of Red, Spencer! Looks like the real Battle of Alberta is the Flames taking the guys the Oilers want.
