It continues to be a busy week for the Calgary Flames. They have placed F Lance Bouma and D Ryan Murphy on unconditional waivers.

Brad Treliving continues to be popular among Calgary Flames fans. He’s been a very busy man the last two weeks and he doesn’t seem to be slowing down. This morning, the Flames announced that they have placed F Lance Bouma and D Ryan Murphy on unconditional waivers for the purpose of a buyout (per Calgary Flames).

Pretty upsetting news for 27-year old Lance Bouma who spent his entire NHL career with the Flames. He was drafted back in 2008 by the Flames at the 78th overall pick and made his NHL debut in January of 2011. He’s played 304 games with the Flames and has 27 goals and 67 points in his career. This past season, he logged just seven points in 61 games.

This choice seems to be popular among Flames fans on Twitter, since Bouma’s contract isn’t the best. He signed a three-year contract before the 2015-2016 season with an average salary of $2.2 million. A slight bit of an overpay for a bottom-six guy.

It’ll also be a little bitter-sweet for D Ryan Murphy who spent a total of 16 hours with the Flames organization. Yesterday, Murphy was acquired in a trade that brought G Eddie Lack to Calgary as well from the Carolina Hurricanes and they got a 7th-round pick in 2019. They sent over in return D Keegan Kanzig and a 6th-round pick in 2019.

Murphy (except for those 16 hours) spent his entire career with the Hurricanes since the 2012-2013 season. He logged 37 points in 151 games.

Murphy seemed like a funny guy. He initially tweeted how excited he is to be have a fresh start with the Calgary Flames and put in his Twitter bio: “Calgary Flames #???”. Those have both been deleted (ouch).

EDIT: GM Brad Treliving has said that apparently the Murphy buyout was necessary in completing the deal with Carolina.

Wherever either of these players end up, I wish them all the best! Good luck Boums and sorry to my friend Eleni whose favourite player is Bouma.
