We were on this subject a month and a half ago and now we’re on it again. Are these rumors about Jaromir Jagr coming to the Calgary Flames accurate?

There was conversations surrounding the Calgary Flames and Jaromir Jagr for a potential signing. That was a couple months ago. Now, we’re back on this topic. Is Jagr coming to the Flames?

This is all speculation, but Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman thinks this could very well be Jagr’s destination. And Flames fans on Twitter don’t seem to mind at all.

I think Calgary has been one that has kind of looked at it. One of his former coaches, Glen Gulutzan, is coaching up there. From what I hear, I think he’s patient enough to wait for the right opportunity because if it doesn’t come in the NHL, maybe it comes overseas. Maybe he goes and plays in the Olympics. Or maybe he starts, as he’s talked about, in his local team from the Czech League, and comes back somewhere during the year.I can tell you that there were a couple of teams that said to me today that they’d heard that maybe Anaheim might be interested, but I checked with that and I was told that’s not the case.So the teams are waiting to see what he eventually decides to do."

Glen Gulutzan coached Jaromir Jagr back when he was the head coach of the Dallas Stars in 2012-2013.

"When I had him … first of all he’s not as fast as he used to be, but below the tops of the circles he is still stronger on the puck than most guys in the League. But probably the most impressive thing with [Jaromir], for me, of all those physical skills, obviously the size (6-foot-3, 230 pounds) and the strength and the hands, is his hockey IQ is off the charts. …We clipped some clips, I remember back in Dallas, that we sat and watched as a coaching staff going, ‘Oh my God, how did he even do that?’ … He can score, he can pass, he can do it all … I think that’s what’s allowed him to play. And he has a real passion for the game."

Again, this is all talk and speculation. But money-wise, there’s room for him. Last season, Jagr had a cap hit of $4 million, however he made an AAV of $5.515 million with bonuses. We can probably expect that he wouldn’t be paid that much, but let’s look at how much money the Calgary Flames even have.

Right now (all info is taken from Cap Friendly), the Flames have $7,165,790 left in cap space. They still need to sign Sam Bennett, two two-way contracts left (Brett Kulak and Tyler Wotherspoon), and that’s it. Then the remainder of money could be left for Jagr.

Everyone assumes Bennett will most likely be given a bridge deal, and after us here at Flame for Thought analyzing how much he’ll be given, it won’t be more than $3.3 million. For arguments sake now, let’s say he won’t be given more than $3 million.

Kulak and Wotherspoon will each be signed at less than $1 million on two-way contracts. And they both may not see a lot of time at the NHL level.

Depending on each of these three player’s contracts, this could potentially leave $3 million to sign Jagr. I’m not saying $3 million is the exact mark, again we don’t yet know how much those other three players will be getting, but it could be around the $3 million mark, give or take. This is completely doable and Flames fans want to see him on a line with Bennett and Kris Versteeg.

I’m not saying tat Jagr will definitely sign with the Flames, but please Jaromir. Make me happy and sign with the Flames.
