Calgary Flames: Will We Be Seeing a Nicklas Grossmann Repeat?
Last year, the Calgary Flames had the whole Nicklas Grossmann Fiasco. With Tanner Glass joining the team on a PTO, will we be seeing the same thing?
The Calgary Flames have most recently signed LW Tanner Glass to a PTO. I mean – move aside Sam Bennett and Jaromir Jagr. Your signings don’t matter now, the main priority was getting Glass on the team.
But all joking aside, yes Glass has joined on a PTO. More about that can be found here.
And with Glass joining, Flames fans were somewhat worried. But then a lot of people of social media have been saying how Glass will most likely just be joining as a PTO to be an extra body presence during training camp and preseason. Not for purposes of a signing.

It is possible that the Flames could be using him to also fill in the void that Lance Bouma left when he was bought out this off-season, but the more realistic conclusion is that he’ll just be an extra body during training camp.
However that being said, after that whole Nicklas Grossmann fiasco last year, I don’t trust the Flames anymore.
Last season, the Flames also signed D Nicklas Grossmann to a PTO. And that was disastrous to say the least. After pre-season, fans were sure that the Calgary Flames would let Grossmann go. But head coach Glen Gulutzan saw potential in him and basically decided that he would be that last defenceman to fill out the Flames lineup.
I somewhat feel bad for Grossmann because oh boy, I’ve never seen a fanbase attack a player on the team they cheer for so much than I saw Flames Twitter get on Grossmann.
But it was horrible. Grossmann had two turnovers in the season opener which both led to goals.
I haven’t looked up the stats, but I think it’s accurate to assume that he got at least three turnovers a game and almost EVERY game that he played, he would get at turnover that led to a goal. It was a bad start to the season (the Flames were 5-10-1 in their first 16 games) and Grossmann definitely didn’t help for that.
After a little bit of this, the Flames decided to call it quits with him and placed him on waivers. When he wasn’t picked up and he was sent down to the AHL, he didn’t report and the Flames were able to terminate his contract (thank the hockey gods).

So while it doesn’t make sense for the Flames to keep Glass, since their LW department is quite solid right now, the Flames have given me trust issues and I can’t trust they’ll do something smart with him. And I’m not saying that Glass is as bad as Grossmann, but again, I have trust issues.
