IT’S GAME DAY! And we’re bringing back Flames Daily. Let’s look at all the news surrounding the Calgary Flames over the last 24 hours.

We can finally say this… it’s GAME DAY! We haven’t been able to say that in MONTHS. But with pre-season underway today, we’re now bringing back Flames Daily! Every morning, be sure to check our website for all news surrounding the Calgary Flames over the last 24 hours.

Pre-season starts tonight for the Flames where they’ll be doing a split-squad against the Edmonton Oilers. Half the Flames and Oilers team will be here in Calgary and half will be in Edmonton. Here are the lineups in each city:

And with pre-season underway and the regular season starting in just 16 days, there will be guys hoping to make the big club. Of course, everyone hopes to make the NHL, but some guys this off-season put in hard work. Including defenceman Rasmus Andersson, who lost 12 pounds this off-season, which was his main priority.

Via Calgaryflames.com:

"Getting to know the guys a little bit better, the lifestyle a little bit better. I just tried to take notes. You watch a guy like Gio every day. How professional he is. Coming every day prepared, 82 games a year. Seems to always do the right thing.I try to watch Dougie a lot, too. I think we’re a bit more similar style-wise. A rightie, a little more offensive. I watch what he does, how well he skates, how long he tries to hold the puck at the offensive blueline before backing off.Just little things, details you pick up watching guys like that."

Andersson finally made his NHL debut last season in April.

"All summer I kept thinking ‘I don’t want to be in the AHL. I want to be in the NHL.’That thinking hasn’t changed. When you’re here, at main camp, you’re in this bubble. With me, they’re looking at keeping a high pace. Not so much about when I have the puck. So I’m trying to be as detailed as I can.It feels like I’m more ready, more confident in myself, than I was last year."

There’s also Dylan Olsen, who signed a PTO with the Flames just days ago. His dad, Darryl, only played in one NHL game – also with the Calgary Flames.

Via Calgary Herald:

"I ran into (retired Flames broadcaster) Peter Maher the other day at our Calgary Canucks golf tournament, and he said, ‘Did you know you have a record?’’What record?’ I asked. He said, ‘in Flames history, you’re the only one to lead the team in pre-season scoring and never be in an opening-night roster.’ I’m like, ‘I don’t know if I want that record, Peter.’"

Darryl may potentially see his childhood dream live in his sons. He’s still a coach here in Alberta in the AJHL. Dylan’s also played for a few different NHL teams before, but he’s never played a full season before and he spends most of his time down in the AHL. Maybe he’ll be playing in the Flames games his dad never got to play in.
