It’s quite an eventful day in Calgary Flames news. I mean, compared to what we’ve been having. Let’s check out some news over the last 24 hours.

Last night, the Calgary Flames played against the Vancouver Canucks in their third preseason game. Hoping to come back after two losses in their split-squad games against the Edmonton Oilers on Monday night, this wasn’t the case.

The Flames did start out the first period quite strong and they were up 3-1 at the end of the first period. However, the Canucks completely dominated the last 40 minutes of the game and took this game 5-3.

Head coach Glen Gulutzan, of course, won’t reveal specifically who didn’t impress him, but he did say he liked some of the guys.

Via Calgary Herald:

I liked some guys. I thought some guys weren’t very good. The time is ticking, here, as every game goes by for guys wanting to stay around. So, there’s that.

Gulutzan was particularly impressed by the fourth line (Tanner Glass, Dillon Dube, Ryan Lomberg), who had some great shifts. Including two goals and two assists.

One guy’s on a PTO and the other two are contracted guys — one’s an American Leaguer, the other one is a junior player that is trying to stick around. I thought every shift, they had an impact.

Now, we NEED to talk about this phenomenal, insane, behind-the-back save by Jon Gillies. Who left hockey fans on Twitter everywhere jaw-dropped.

I mean, I know it’s only preseason, but this definitely is in the running for save of the year. But with playing with Mark Jankowski through college and in the AHL, Janko says that’s not the only time that Gillies has made incredible saves like that.

Via Calgary Herald:

You guys are going to be surprised but that’s not the best save I’ve seen from him. That was incredible but he does that on a daily basis. He’s just a heckuva goalie and that doesn’t surprise me.

By the way, here is the save that Jankowski was talking about:

Now we need to talk about something that I don’t want to talk about. The new arena talks. Again. For like the tenth time in the last two weeks.

As promised last week in a press conference held by the Calgary Flames and Ken King, the Flames ownership revealed their plans today about a new arena deal. This is in response to city council releasing their proposal last week, which was rejected by the Flames.

The Flames were prepared to give $275 million up front while $225 million would be from a Community Revitalization Levy (CRL). Basically, the taxes from the city would be paying $225 million. I won’t go into too much detail about the new arena because we’ll be releasing an article about it later today.
