Happy Sunday! The Calgary Flames reduced their roster size to 40 players yesterday. Let’s check out some more Flames news.

Yesterday the Calgary Flames announced that they have cut their roster down to 40 players. Those players include: Austin Carroll (RW), Josh Healey (LD), Oliver Kylington (LD), Andrew Mangiapane (LW), Adam Ollas Mattsson (LD), Tyler Parsons (G) and Colby Robak (LD) (Calgaryflames.com).

These seven players will be playing with the Flames AHL affiliate, the Stockton Heat. However with Jon Gillies and David Rittich both potentially playing for Stockton, Tyler Parsons may be heading to the Kansas City Mavericks, the Flames ECHL affiliate.

Flames goaltending coach, Jordan Sigalet, hopes this won’t be worrisome for Parsons.

"I had a good talk with him before he left. He was good. He sees the numbers here, understands that right now it’s really about getting our NHL guys ready. So he’s excited to get to Stockton, get settled and started there. He’s in a bit of a different situation, not really knowing where he’ll actually be playing. But I said to him: ‘No matter where you wind up, it’s about playing time.’ I also reminded him that a lot of awful good goalies have gone through the East Coast League.(Braden) Holtby. (Jonathan) Quick. Even Mike Smith started there. So he’s got a great example right here in front of him.Everyone wants to be here and if they can’t be here they want to be in the American Hockey League. But it’s going to be a battle. There are going to be good goalies down there fighting for spots. He knows (the ECHL) is a possibility, and the OHL is a possibility. Our mindset, though, is that he needs to be challenged, we have to get him into pro hockey. And he’s got to play, no matter where that is. Gotta play to get better.Nothing compares to games. Sitting on the bench somewhere isn’t going to help his development. He definitely needs that challenge of being counted upon."

Last season with the London Knights of the OHL, Tyler Parsons was easily one of their best players. And was one of the reasons they were in the playoffs as long as they were. He had the best save-percentage among all goalies in the OHL this past year with 0.925 sv%. Parsons also played for Team USA at the World Juniors this year, where he stopped every shot that came his way in the shootout in the Gold medal game against Canada, helping USA earn a gold medal.

He may not be at the NHL level yet, but he just turned 20. I have no doubt in my mind he’ll be somewhere in the NHL by the time he’s 23.

Some of our stuff on Tyler Parsons

Flames Daily: Parsons shines.

Let’s look at Flames goaltending prospect Tyler Parsons.

"This season, the London Knights unfortunately lost to the Erie Otters in the second round of the playoffs. But Calgary Flames goaltending prospect Tyler Parsons was still phenomenal. He helped his team to a 2-0 shutout win in game 1 while making 46 saves. Let’s look at him some more."

Who is the Flames goalie of the future?

"Calgary Flames management improved the team this off-season acquiring Mike Smith finding a solid starting goaltender. He is a great replacement for Brian Elliott, but he is 35-years-old and is most likely not the goalie of the future in Calgary. Somewhere down the line, the Flames will have to put their trust into one of their many talented, young goalies."
