Welcome Jaromir Jagr to the Calgary Flames! Does the ageless wonder bump a player nearly half his age out of the lineup?

Today, the headline news regarding the Calgary Flames is that the team has signed Jaromir Jagr to a one-year deal. With two players on waivers and two others assigned to Stockton, the team is getting closer to their 23 man roster limit. One of those players not being sent down is Mark Jankowski, and rightfully so. Jankowski has been one of the better players for the Flames during the preseason. So, does bringing in the living legend like Jagr have a trickle-down effect in the lineup to where it pushes the second year pro down to Stockton?

Good Things Come to Those Who Wait

Mark Jankowski should never have to play another game in the AHL. His progression from Draft Day 2012 to October 2, 2017, has been staggering. As the 21st overall pick in that draft year, the Flames knew they were bringing in a “project” to their organization.

Four years of improvement while playing at Providence College helped Jankowski grow into a stellar prospect for the Calgary Flames. Last season, the Hamilton native lit the American Hockey League (AHL) on fire. Janko neared a point per game average, (56 points in 64 games) and posted 5 points in 5 playoff games as well. His preseason has also shown him that he is more than ready for the National Hockey League this year. His skating, tempo and other intangibles that go along with being a full-time NHLer are all there right now. Therefore, Jankowski deserves to be on the opening night roster.

Jankowski’s Projected Role With The Flames

While Jankowski might start on the fourth line, he will benefit in that role more than toiling another year down in the AHL. He has the skill, the upside to take the most of each opportunity and run with it. Could he move up in the lineup and play third line minutes, kill penalties or even see power play time? Absolutely. This is something that will need time, and time to even adapt. Could Jankowski spend time in the press box? Sure, there could be those nights where he is a scratch. Being in an NHL environment for an entire year would benefit Jankowski and not hurt him. Despite signing Jagr, it should not have a trickle down effect that bumps the young forward out of Calgary.
