After a disappointing loss to the Detroit Red Wings, the Calgary Flames will be looking to forget all about that game. More Flames news here.
With an 8-2 for the Detroit Red Wings last night against the Calgary Flames, this is a game that everyone wants to forget about. Specifically with the line brawl that happened late in the game that we may be seeing some suspensions and fines for. We don’t know what those will be yet, but they’ll most likely be announced later today.
Some players involved in the line brawl had some thoughts on the matter, including head coach Glen Gulutzan. Gulutzan especially had some thoughts on a call on Matthew Tkachuk who had somewhat of a “love tap” on Luke Witkowski as he was getting off the ice.
On one hand, it seems very minimal. But on the other hand, according to the rulebook, something like that is still technically considered a spear, so I can see both sides.

Via NHL:
"62.1 Spearing – Spearing shall mean stabbing an opponent with the pointof the stick blade, whether contact is made or not."
And of course, because Tkachuk loves getting under everyone’s skin, he obviously had some comments as well.
Via CBC Sports:
"“Wisniewski, or whatever his name is, was just an absolute wrecking ball trying to start stuff, starting a complete circus with how many minutes left?” said Tkachuk, who was assessed a spearing major. “It’s a joke that a guy like that would … just do something pretty stupid that kind of started everything. And then [he] turns back and chirps our whole bench, didn’t want to go anywhere, so I just went over there to give him a little poke and tell him just to get out of here.“He was just looking for an excuse to come back. It’s just stupid.”"
Tkachuk will be having a hearing and he will most likely get a fine, but if he’s getting a suspension is still up in the air. With Luke Witkowski, it’s an automatic ten-game suspension for coming back out on the ice. So he’ll be out of the lineup.
On the plus side, with the Calgary Flames announcing that Jon Gillies has been sent back down to Stockton, that means that Mike Smith will most likely be in net for Saturday’s game (thank the hockey gods). And it’s probably a good thing he wasn’t in yesterday’s game when that brawl happened…
