The Calgary Flames had a decent week and went 2-1-1. Some players stood out more than others. Let’s take a look at the three stars for last week.

The Calgary Flames had a busy week, playing four games in six days. They went 2-1-1 which was a pretty good week, seeing how their week before that went (1-2-0). But this week, the really should have been 3-1-0. In their game against the Toronto Maple Leafs, they did everything right and completely outperformed them, but they were no match for Freddie Andersen and lost in the shootout.

But some players stood out more than others. And some performed better than others. This isn’t to discredit any other players, but we’ve got to give credit where credit’s due. And here at Flame for Thought, we’ve got you covered.

So without further ado, here are our three stars for the week of December 4-10.

Mike Smith

This wouldn’t be a true Flame for Thought list without an honourable mention. And last week’s honourable three-star mention is Mike Smith. Honestly, if he had a decent game against the Philadelphia Flyers, he would have made this list.

The new Calgary Flames netminder has been one of their best players since the start of the season. In the game against the Leafs where they lost in the shootout, he still came up big and made some key saves to help the Flames earn a point. He stopped 28 of 29 shots and did everything right, including some big saves on the penalty kill.

In the game against the Vancouver Canucks, Mike Smith played in his 500th NHL game. He became the 70th goaltender to play in 500 games and just the 11th active goalie to reach that milestone.

He played in his 500th NHL game, how could we not give him a star of the week?
