It was finally a busy day for some members of the Calgary Flames at the World Championship. Let’s check out how today went down.
After a couple of slow days for the Calgary Flames at the World Championship, in addition to no playoff hockey, it’s been a rough couple days for us. But today was better! We finally had game seven between the Winnipeg Jets and the Nashville Predators and we finally had more than just one member of the Flames playing at the World Championship.
Today, Bill Peters Canadian squad, Johnny Gaudreau for Team USA, and David Rittich for Team Czech were all in action today. Let’s see how each game went down.
Team USA vs Team Latvia
In a weird turn of events, the Americans found themselves down 2-1 against Team Latvia early in the second period. They managed to tie up the game and this one required overtime, where 3-on-3 hero, Johnny Gaudreau, assisted on the game-winning goal from Cam Atkinson. Although, it was on the powerplay so it wasn’t 3-on-3, but you get it. Gaudreau now has points in all four games so far and had four shots in today’s win over Latvia.
With USA’s win today and Finland’s loss yesterday, USA now find themselves back on top of Group B.
Team Canada vs Team Norway
Bill Peters’ squad found themselves in another dominating win, with a 5-0 victory over Norway. A Connor McDavid hat trick and two goals from Bo Horvat helped Canada climb up to second place in Group B, however, they’ve now tied USA in points for the first time this tournament.
Team Czech Republic vs Team Russia
David Rittich got the nod today for just his second Worlds start and second start at the tournament. However, the game didn’t start off too well for the netminder. He let in the first shot from the Russians just a minute into the game. But he found his groove throughout the rest of the game.
This game went to overtime where David Pastrnak was the OT hero today to lead Czech to a 4-3 OT win. This was Rittich’s first World Championship win where he stopped 23 of 26 shots! While the Czechs have three wins, all three have come in overtime, giving them just six points at the tournament to sit in the fifth spot in Group A.
