The Calgary Flames made the massive decision this off-season to promote assistant coach Ryan Huska to the Head Coach role to replace Darryl Sutter, and while it’s a move that’s been widely praised, there was a portion of Flames fans who wanted to see Calgary Wranglers Head Coach Mitch Love be the one to lead this team forward. Since Huska was given the role, we haven’t heard much from Love, and while many simply expected him to overlook the perceived slight and join the Flames as an assistant, he has reportedly been talking to other teams around the league about a potential role.

As a part of that process, it appears Love has circled back to Calgary and talked to Huska about a role on his new staff, and with many supporters within the organization, it’s clear that they want Love to take on a position with this staff.

According to GM Craig Conroy, the team are looking to get this new staff under Huska finalized before the end of the week, and if Love circled back to Calgary weeks after the announcement of the new Head Coach, it’s definitely a sign that a return is on the cards, as he is well respected and would have likely landed another role already if it was out there. Ultimately, Love is a very talented coach, but the Flames believed he needed much more experience before he can make the step up to Head Coach in the NHL, and to do that, he needs to find a role on an NHL staff, so a return to Calgary is now looking very likely for the two-time AHL Coach of the Year.
