New Calgary Flames Forward Inks Two-Year Extension
The Calgary Flames made their first move of the off-season yesterday, securing the services of 25-year old forward Yegor Sharangovich and a 2023 third-round pick for Tyler Toffoli, and now, he has inked a two-year extension to stay in Calgary. Those two years will take him right up to Unrestricted Free Agency status when he is 27-years old, and right now, the Flames are hoping he can find career form in those two seasons.
The deal carries an annual value of $3.1 million, a fair price for his production thus far, as even in a down year in 2022-23, he managed 75 games, producing 13 goals and 17 assists without much of a role for the Devils. His career year came in just his second NHL season in 2021-22 when he played in 76 games, posting 24 goals and 22 assists for 46 points, showing that he’s very capable of being a top-six player if put in the right position.
With such an elite shot, that right position in 2023-24 is potentially alongside an elite playmaker in Jonathan Huberdeau, and if the teams offensive performance can come alive under Marc Savard and Ryan Huska after a dreadful 2022-23 campaign, both of those guys could benefit from being line-mates in a big way.
There’s still plenty of moves for Calgary to make before the season rolls around, so we won’t know Yegor’s role until that happens, but right now, he’s locked in for another two years, and it appears the Flames are confident that he can get back to career form as they look to move this franchise forward in a new direction.
So what do you think? Is this a good move for Calgary? Do you still agree/disagree with the trade made yesterday? Can Yegor be a star with the Flames alongside Huberdeau? As always, let us know in the comments below.
