Calgary Flames Extend Qualifying Offers To Three Players
The Calgary Flames head into this off-season with plenty of work to do, but as free agency begins, they have little to no salary cap, and with so many moves to make, this is the last position they want to be in as a franchise. Sure, some trades could no doubt loosen the tight grip the salary cap has on this front office, but with only one being made so far this off-season, they likely won’t be big players as free agency kicks off, but one thing they did on the eve of FA was extend qualifying offers to three Calgary Wranglers from a season ago.
Those three players are Ben Jones, Emilio Pettersen and Martin Pospisil, and with the overall lack of depth the Flames currently have following the 2023 NHL Draft, this may be their best opportunity to make a push for an NHL roster.
While none of these three players are expected to be big pieces of the Flames future, they certainly have the talent, and if injuries strike throughout the year, they could be called upon to play a role down the lineup, that is if they end up accepting the offers.
With no major moves expected in free agency today, the Flames have plenty of work to do, and after adding some great young prospects to their pool in the draft, it would benefit them to keep some talented Wranglers around, and if Jones, Pettersen and Pospisil are given the chance to continue their development, they could be pleasant surprises for this organization.
