After a slow start to free agency that saw them make just two moves in the first three days, the Calgary Flames have suddenly come alive, as they have not only added some new names to the Calgary Wranglers AHL squad, and now, they’ve made some more solid moves for the future of the organization. On Thursday, the team announced that they have re-signed two players that were key to the success of the Calgary Wranglers a season ago, with one-year, two-way deals for each.

Firstly is Ben Jones, a 24-year old Ontario native who has spent three years in the AHL, with two games of NHL experience before joining the Wranglers a season ago, in which he played in 71 games of their first place finish in the Pacific Division. Over those games, Jones finished 17 goals and 37 assists for a career high 54 points, and while he may not be on the NHL roster anytime soon, he’s a great depth signing who could play his way into that role one day, especially as the team looks to get younger.

Then we have Emilio Pettersen, a 23-year old center who has three years experience in the AHL with the Stockton Heat/Calgary Wranglers, where he also managed to have a career year in 2022-23 as he looks to climb his way onto the Flames roster. In 61 games, Pettersen tallied 19 goals and 25 assists for 44 points on a very talented Wranglers squad, and with another year to prove himself, he is someone to keep an eye on going forward as a potential riser in the Flames organization.

So what do you think Flames fans? Are either of these names someone you could see pushing for a spot on the roster this season? What do you think of the Wranglers chances of a Calder Cup run this season? As always, let us know all your thoughts in the comments below.
