Over the past 18 months, we’ve seen several players leave the Calgary Flames organization, including Johnny Gaudreau, Matthew Tkachuk, Sean Monahan and Milan Lucic, and while for the most part, they speak glowingly about the city and the franchise, the latter certainly had some less than flattering words to say.

During a recent interview, Lucic, who played over 200 games over four years with the Flames had this to say about the city of Calgary;

While it’s true that there isn’t much to do in terms of non-hockey sports during the season, there’s plenty to do beyond that, and with the natural beauty of the mountains that exists within an hours drive throughout the year, there’s many reasons why players should want to sign and play in the city of Calgary. With a new arena on the way (hopefully), that will take care of one major criticism, and if the team can start building a winner with this young core, there will be many more reasons for players to see Calgary as a destination.

Regardless, it’s certainly interesting to see the perspective of players, especially ones that have spent significant time not only in Calgary but other cities as well, but the hope for Flames fans is that the new arena, a Jonathan Huberdeau bounce back and some promising play from this young core can turn the perception of the Flames around.

So what do you think Flames fans? Is Lucic right about the city, and why players don’t want to come here? Can that be turned around with a new arena, if one does eventually come? What else can the city do to entice players? As always, let us know all your thoughts in the comments below.
