While many criticized the Calgary Flames 2023 NHL Draft, there are many people out there that believe the pick of Vancouver Giants forward Samuel Honzek was a fantastic pick for the Flames, and based on early returns, he is reportedly impressing in a big way.
Standing at 6-foot-4, Honzek is always going to stand out on the ice because of his size and physical presence, but it’s his skill and tenacity that truly separate him, and in Flames development camp, he stood out to all that watched.
Alongside 2021 first-round pick Matt Coronato, Honzek flashed plenty of talent on both ends of the ice, and while he’s unlikely to make the NHL team out of training camp, his performance alongside the clubs top players will no doubt dictate just how quickly he can rise through the ranks.
There’s still plenty for him to work on before he makes the next step, but given that he’s just 18-years of age and already dominating the Flames development camp, it’s a great sign for someone who needs to become a key member of this organization for their youth movement to truly take shape. One of Honzek’s biggest strengths is his versatility, as he has the talent to play on the powerplay and the penalty kill, and with a frame that will be filled out as he ages along with speed, power and a great shot, this first impression is a good sign that he’s on his way to good things with the Flames organization.
So what do you think Flames fans? How are you feeling about the reported impression he made at development camp? What do you think the ceiling is for the teams 2023 first round pick? Who else stood out for you at development camp? As always, let us know all your thoughts in the comments below.
