Last season, the Calgary Flames roster underwent plenty of change, and on the blue line the team saw the most change as both Mackenzie Weegar and Rasmus Andersson, long-term veterans on the Flames defensive group were traded, with the team opting to rely on the youth to lead them forward.
However, they did get some experience in return, as the team acquired veteran Zach Whitecloud in the deal with the Vegas Golden Knights, and upon arrival, he quickly became one of the most popular players on the team. That is not only among the fanbase, but in the community as well, and while there's immense trade speculation around the veteran, he heads into the 2026/27 season as one of the most important players on the Flames roster.
Zach Whitecloud Became a Fan Favourite After Arriving in Calgary
Entering the Calgary Flames phase of his career, Whitecloud has never been known as an offensive force or even a consistent contributor, as he posted 15 or less points in four of his five full seasons with the organization.
However, when he arrived in Calgary, Whitecloud finally got the opportunity on the top pairing that he was never afforded in Vegas, and while he may not have scored any goals, with 10 assists in 31 games, Whitecloud was on pace to put up career high offensive numbers.
Not only that however, but Whitecloud immediately became incredibly popular among the fanbase in the community as well as in the locker room, and given that he was handed an 'A' early in his career with the team, it shows just how much his leadership is valued in Calgary.
What Will Whitecloud's Role be in 2026/27?
This season, his role is less certain as the Flames likely look to prioritize the youth with Simon Nemec and Zayne Parekh, but given how responsible he is on and off the ice, there's a good chance he plays on the second pairing, whether it be with Yan Kuznetsov or Jake Middleton.
Like other Flames over the past few years, Whitecloud will be on trade watch throughout the season, and given that he's currently got two years remaining on his deal at $2.75 million per year, he'll be a very attractive piece that contending teams around the NHL would absolutely love to add ahead of the 2027 trade deadline.
Ultimately though, if Whitecloud sticks around beyond the deadline, he's going to play a major role for the Flames, and while he may never end up hitting 20 points in career, given the role that he'll play alongside the penalty kill, this is the best opportunity he's had yet to put together a career year offensively.
