Winners: Calgary Flames Prospects
On the ice, there were absolutely no winners for the Flames, with very few standout performers in a game where the team once again played low-event, boring hockey that resulted in a 6-1 defeat against a team that is not expected to contend in 2026/27.
However, the winners of this situation are the Flames prospects that will be arriving between now and the end of next season, as the lack of production and standout play will give them even more of an opportunity to come in and compete immediately.
Whether or not Ryan Huska will give them those chances right off the bat, only time will tell, but for those in the NCAA and down in the AHL, watching a performance like this must have them excited for the potential to make the full-time jump at some point either this season or next.
Losers: Calgary Flames Veterans
Coming into the year, the focus in Calgary should be on the prospects, but instead, we saw a fourth line made up of veterans with Brennan Othmann sitting on the bench, and unfortunately for Calgary, none of their other veterans stood up either.
Outside of Ryan Strome who scored the Flames only goal on the night, there was little to speak of in terms of production, and with the veteran blue liners struggling to limit chances on Dustin Wolf, it wasn't a good performance from anyone.
Simply put, the prospects are on the way whether the veterans like it or not, and if there's more and more games like this throughout the year, expect to see plenty of changes as the Flames continue to transition into the future.
