2021: New Jersey Devils stayed at No. 4; Drafted Luke Hughes

The New Jersey Devils have one of the best core groups in the entire NHL, and right now, the crown jewel of their rebuild is star centre Jack Hughes, who was drafted by the team back in 2019 after they won the lottery and picked No. 1 overall. In 2021, the team had the fourth-best odds at winning the lottery, giving them a 10.3% chance to do so, but instead, they ended up staying put, landing the No. 4 overall pick in the draft.
In doing so, they drafted Jack's brother Luke, who was a very promising defenseman coming out of the University of Michigan after posting 27 goals and 87 points across two seasons at the NCAA level. In the NHL, he's not quite taken the leap that they would have hoped, but with 128 points in 223 games as a blue liner at just 22-years old, it's safe to say that his future in the NHL still remains very bright.
The Flames already have great blue liners of the future, but if they can stay at No. 4 like the Devils back in 2021, there's a good chance they could draft a very good player for the future of the franchise.
