Under the new format, this was the first instance of a team going backwards in the draft with the fourth-best odds, as the Flyers dropped to No. 5 overall, the position the Flames have the highest percentage of landing in the draft. However, the Flyers were still able to nab a potential superstar in a loaded draft class, as they picked up Cutter Gauthier, although they would then trade him to the Anaheim Ducks in a deal centred around Jamie Drysdale.

Gauthier has made Philadelphia pay as he put up a massive campaign, tallying a career high in goals (41) and points (69), becoming a focal point of the Ducks future, just what the Flames need in this upcoming draft. Sure, moving down isn't the ideal outcome for Calgary, but after picking just once in the top-five in Calgary history, getting anywhere in the top-five is going to be a success for the Flames.
