One of the Calgary Flames biggest needs heading into the 2026 NHL Draft is a left shot defenseman, and thankfully for Craig Conroy and the Flames front office, there's plenty of them in the upcoming draft.
While the likes of Carson Carels and Alberts Smits get all the attention, Malte Gustafsson is a player that could rise up draft boards in the coming weeks, with the big bodied Swede being a potential star of the future.
Whether or not he's just a big body, only time will tell, but given the Flames needs at LHD, let's take a look at Gustafsson and his potential heading into the 2026 NHL Draft.
Pre-Draft Production
Year | Team | League | Games Played | Goals | Assists | Points | +/- |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
2024/25 | HV71 Jr. | SweJr. | 36 | 2 | 6 | 8 | -6 |
2025/26 | HV71 Jr. | SweJr. | 19 | 4 | 8 | 12 | -18 |
2025/26 | HV71 Jonkoping | SHL | 27 | 0 | 3 | 3 | -8 |
Despite the potential, Gustafsson has struggled to translate all of that talent to the scoresheet, but with 27 games of experience at the professional level in 2025/26 in Sweden, he showed that he's got the size and the ability to play and succeed against grown men.
While some defenseman aren't natural goal scorers, to have just 6 goals across 55 games played at the junior level is a particular disappointment, showing that while the talent is there, it hasn't translated into production on the ice. However, not all prospects will be dominating on the scoreboard, and given the tools at his disposal, there's a good chance that he can eventually grow into that type of player at the professional level.
Strengths
At 6-foot-4, 200 pounds, one of Gustafsson's most obvious strengths is his size, and unlike others, he knows how to use it, as he held up well against competition in the SHL last season despite being just 17-years-old. With the puck, Gustafsson is highly responsible and intelligent, with the development beyond the scoresheet over the past two years being very positive, as he is expected to continue that over the next few years.
As for the skating, it's one of the biggest positives in Gustafsson's game, as he has the ability to keep up with quicker wingers while getting physical with bigger players, making him an ideal defenseman in the modern NHL.
