Weaknesses

Unfortunately for Lin, some of that offensive talent is severely limited against tougher opponents, as he lacks the physicality to truly shut down bigger offensive players, and as a result, he often finds himself on the ice for plenty of goals.

Not only that, but he has a habit of turning the puck over coming out of his own end, with the tendency to pass first limiting his game and increasing the possibility of turnovers, something that needs to be cleaned up. Given that he's just 18-years-old, there's plenty of time for him to turn that around, but heading into the 2026 NHL Draft, it's something that's going to hold him back from being seen as a top defender in this class.

NHL Comparisons

There are plenty of comparisons in the NHL for Lin, given that smaller, smarter puck-moving defenseman are becoming increasingly productive in the league, with some naming Quinn Hughes, Cale Makar and Lane Hutson at the high end as comparisons.

When asked about his own comparison, Lin named Drew Doughty as a player he modelled his game after, and while his work in the defensive zone needs to improve to get to that level, given his effeciency and his effectiveness all over the ice in every situation, it's not a bad comparison at all.

Fit with the Flames

Like other top defensemen in this draft, Lin has the offensive upside to be a true difference maker in the NHL, but with the Flames right side already looking set, it would need to be a truly elite prospect for the team to take a player at arguably the biggest position of strength in the organization.

However, the offensive talent makes him a very appealing prospect to the Flames, and with no guarantees over Henry Mews or Hunter Brzustewicz, Lin is a player that could make sense for the team if other moves around the first-round happen as well.

When will he be available to the Flames?

Given how unpredictable the 2026 NHL Draft is shaping up to be, Lin is another one in the crop of prospects that are expected to be available between No. 10 and 17 overall, with team needs likely dictating exactly where he gets drafted.

Obviously, the Flames won't be using the No. 6 overall pick on him, but if they can land a centre or a star forward at that position, they may be wise to move up and secure Lin as a key piece of their blue line for years to come in the middle of the first-round.

Verdict

Ultimately, Lin isn't exactly a player of need for the Flames, and while he'd be a solid pick if he were to fall to late in the first-round and the team have already selected a forward, but unless that unlikely scenario unfolds, it would be a true shock to see him leave as a Flame on draft night.
