Weaknesses

Despite his 6-foot-1 frame, Cullen weighs in at less than 180 pounds, and given that, strength is considered to be a major issue, as he could be pushed around at the next level unless he can put on some muscle and start battling along the boards.

As mentioned above, he has a very limited sample size, with just 48 games played in the USHL over the last two seasons, so while he showed immense promise in that time, the lack of playing time may turn teams off as they haven't gotten enough tape and seen enough development from him in that limited ice time.

NHL Comparisons

Given his strong sense of playmaking while lacking elite level physical traits, the best case scenario for Cullen at the next level would be Mitch Marner, although that's a very optimistic outlook of his potential at the NHL level.

On the more realistic side, he projects to be a contributor like Nick Schmaltz, who can drive play with his offensive creativity and playmaking, and while he may never be a 30+ goal scorer, he can chip in with consistent goals, just not at a high level.

Fit with the Flames

Right now, the Flames have plenty of young, talented wingers coming through the organization, but given that we don't know how many will pan out, the NHL Draft is always a good time to potentially add more young talent to the organization.

Last year, the Flames took a chance on some centre prospects, and this year, they'll likely be targeting a LHD and another C, but if they believe in Cullen's playmaking abilities, there's a chance the team could take a swing on his potential.

When will he be available for the Flames?

Some have Cullen listed as a top-10 prospect in this draft, and if that's the concensus, there's likely little chance the Flames are trading back into the top-10 to land him, but if he falls to the middle of the first-round, that's when they could pounce.

Right now, it's unclear just how much Craig Conroy is willing to give up to move back into the middle parts of the first-round, but with a clear objective to land elite level talent, there's a good opportunity for them in Cullen if he begin to slip.

Verdict

Cullen is a very good talent, and is arguably one of the safer picks in the 2026 NHL Draft, but with the Flames looking to take swings on offensive upside, he may not be worth trading up for. However, the team also need safe picks that can play anywhere in the top-9, and given Cullen's projections, he could be a great pick if the price isn't too high.
