Calgary Flames Announce NextGen Showcase Roster For Matchup With the Edmonton Oilers

The 2026/27 NHL season is right around the corner, with the Calgary Flames home opener coming against the Seattle Kraken on October 1st, with four pre-season matchups taking place beginning on September 20th and ending on September 26th.

Before that and even training camp begins however, the Flames will battle the Edmonton Oilers in a NextGen Showcase game on Monday, September 14th, and given the Flames talented prospect pool, fans were excited about seeing some young names do battle with the Oilers.

Now, with the event just a few days away, the Flames have officially announced the roster for that matchup, and while all of their top names are unavailable due to their college/European commitments, this is a roster that's still full of immense talent.

Flames Announce Loaded Prospect Roster for Matchup With the Oilers

Unfortunately for Flames fans that want to see a major glimpse into the future, the big names such as Cullen Potter, Ethan Wyttenbach, Cole Reschny, Carson Carels and Theo Stockselius will all be unavailable, as has been reported for some time now. However, that doesn't mean there's a lack of talent on this roster, and that was proven on Friday when the team announced the roster for the matchup.

First up is the forward group, and while it's weakned due to the absences mentioned above, they will have some good NHL experience leading the way as 20-year-old Matvei Gridin will get his first opportunity in a Flames uniform in 2026/27. Beyond that, names such as Tyson Gross (six games of NHL experience), Jonathan Castagna, Chase Harrington, Aydar Suniev (seven games of NHL experience) and Joe Iginla will be names to keep a close eye on.

Defensively, this is a loaded group with Bode Laylin, Axel Hurtig, Jakob Leander, Abram Wiebe (four games of NHL experience), Kent Anderson and Mace'o Phillips will be the top names to watch out for. In net, the team can only play so many players, but clearly the NHL talent is there, with Arsenii Sergeev (one game of NHL experience), Owen Say and Kirill Zarubin will likely be the three names to get opportunities in this game.

Do the Flames Have the Best Prospect Pool in the NHL?

While this isn't the most star studded roster, there's plenty of future NHLers up and down the Flames lineup, and led by Matvei Gridin, they will have the opportunity to make a major statement against an Oilers team who has a fairly limited prospect pool.

Still, missing most of their top prospects, the Flames have some very intriguing names on their roster, and given how big an opportunity this is for them to make their mark on the big Saddledome stage against a key rival, they'll all be looking to take advantage and make an impact in front of plenty of Flames fans.
