Two summers ago, the Calgary Flames landed former Flame Ryan Lomberg in free agency, with the team hoping to add a high-energy, culture setting veteran that could help them back to the Stanley Cup Playoffs.
In two seasons, Lomberg played his role perfectly, but as 2025/26 came to a close, he found himself scratched more often than not, with the team looking to prioritize the future and skill in the lineup instead. Now, he's set to be a free agent as of July 1st, and while some would love to see him back with the team, as of late, it's been trending towards a departure from the 31-year-old.
That topic was recently discussed by Calgary Flames General Manager Craig Conroy, and apparently, he feels the same, and as much as he likes Lomberg, for the future of the team, it appears he's on the way out.
"I love Ryan. I mean, we brought him in. He's been unbelievable. You know, I just do think with the amount of bodies we have up front, you know, it will probably be tough to bring back Ryan."Craig Conroy

This past season, Lomberg posted 4 goals and 9 points in 57 games, but he played his role to perfection as the agitator and leader in the Flames locker room, but with Conroy's statement, it's all but certain that he'll now head to free agency as of Wednesday, July 1st.
