Coming into training camp, much of the Calgary Flames roster could have already been assumed, and with a limited pre-season, there wasn't very many opportunities for someone to shake things up. There were pushes from talented young players to make the roster, but with the team having so many veterans to fill holes, the roster wasn't expected to change too much under Ryan Huska and Craig Conroy.
Now, the 2026/27 season is officially upon us, and with the Flames set to start the season at home against the Seattle Kraken, they've put the finishing touches on the opening night roster, making their squad for this season official.
Calgary Flames Finalize Official 2026/27 Roster
The biggest question mark over this roster revolved around the depth defenseman of Joel Hanley and Brayden Pachal, with some believing that one or both could be moved via waivers or trade. Beyond that, it was Aydar Suniev that pushed hardest for a role on this roster, but with the announcement, it has revealed that both veterans will be on the roster while Suniev will be heading back to the American Hockey League.

With Jonathan Huberdeau hitting the IR, that means the Flames have gone with 13 forwards and 8 defenseman, choosing to keep up Brennan Othmann, who put forward a fantastic performance in the pre-season, and even if he isn't in the opening night lineup, he could make a significant push as the season goes on.
What can this Calgary Flames Roster do in 2026/27?
While players like Zayne Parekh, Matvei Gridin, Matt Coronato and Simon Nemec stand out on this squad, beyond that, the elite level talent is very limited, with the concensus around the NHL being that this team will end the 2026/27 campaign in the bottom-three of the overall NHL standings.
Clearly, the Flames have a roster that's arguably the worst in the entire league, and while there's plenty to look forward too in Calgary, the final year of the Saddledome certainly won't be pretty to watch.
Ultimately, that's the way things should be, with fans mostly excited that the organization has finally picked their direction and hope to stick to it, and while the future as a whole hasn't yet arrived, if 2026/27 plays out well, it will provide key experience for a team that's looking to build a long-term contender.
